Act Like

Thinking About Today by Dan Fick

Act like this is your last day on Earth and live like this is your first day of eternal life with God.

John 3:16 (NIV) – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We often hear that “this is the first day of the rest of your life”, perhaps with the meaning that we should forget the past and begin anew. We are also asked “what would you do if this was the last day of your life”. Both are intriguing recommendations. We cannot change the past, and we do not know when God will call us to heaven.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (NIV) – “This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.”

Whether today is the first, last or just today, we should live life to the fullest. Consider studying your Bible, praying for guidance, pondering the possibilities, and making a plan for each day, even if it is to take the day off. And, it wouldn’t hurt to think about not just what this day might hold for you, but what you might do with others.

Matthew 6:31-34 (NIV) – “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

As believers in Jesus Christ and the forgiveness, salvation and grace He promises, we should greet each day as a new beginning to commit acts of kindness and bless others with our abundance of love. But, we should also realize and prioritize those messages of God’s saving grace to those we remember need to hear and accept salvation before their last day on Earth comes all too sudden.

Psalm 145:1-2 (NIV) – “I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.”

One act of kindness, one word of encouragement, one eternal thought planted could be why you are here and where God has placed you. Live with the urgency to bless others with the peace that they are eternally blessed. Then, each day will be a blessing for you and those around you.

Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, help us to help others. Teach us to see each new day as the dawn of opportunity. Show us Your plan for our day. We pray this in Your Son’s precious name. Amen.

Live with expectation full of His spirit guiding you!
